Lagosians, Tourists thrilled at the 2018 Boat Regatta as Lagos showcases Riverine Culture

Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture hosted the 2018 Boat Regatta funfair at the Lagoon Waterfront in Ikoyi area of the state.
The ceremonial regatta is one of the major festivals listed in the 2018 Calendar of Arts and Culture Events by Lagos State earlier released in the year.
Speaking in an interview after the event, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, said the Regatta is a cultural and entertainment funfair meant to showcase part of the State’s rich aquatic cultural asset, being a festival that is common to the traditional coastline communities of Lagos State.
According to the Commissioner, the water regatta also serves as family recreation show for the benefits of Lagosians and tourists on Easter Sunday.
“’The boat regatta is a traditional tourism feature of Lagos State and this year’s outing, in line with the vision of Governor Ambode, will further showcase the tourism values and beauty of Lagos waterways and market its potentials to local and foreign tourists as well as investors,” Ayorinde said.
In his welcome address, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode represented by his deputy, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule, pledged continuous support to the ministry, stating that Lagos state is set to be at the driving seat of the nation’s economy through the promotion of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
The event witnessed performances by entertainment boats, traditional boat regatta parade, and cultural display by various riverine communities, water safety tips as well as other side attractions.
Participating water communities also such as competed to win prizes on open water swimming, canoe race competition and outstanding regatta boats.
Private boat owners and other stakeholders involved in marine leisure and hospitality ventures also featured on the sidelines at the event.
The Boat Regatta was graced by some members of the Lagos White Cap Chiefs, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Femi Pedro, Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro amongst others.
